Here's my top 5

Panaracer Extreme Duro PT  Review rating 4 out of 5
Weight-236g. Cost-approx £34.99
Tough and sturdy tire that will need some decent tyre levers to get on! Excellent puncture breaker running underneath the tread, its 15 mm wide so will protect against most of the flints and thorns that cause the majority of the trouble. Whilst there isn’t the greatest amount of grip the slightly sticky rubber compound will give you a lot of durability in even the slimy of road surfaces.

Continental Gator Hardshell  Review rating 4 ½ out of 5
Weight 266g. Cost-approx £38.95
The best of the review. Gator skins are popular and the Gator Hardshell will keep Continental sales healthy. With a puncture breaker belt that runs right up to the shoulder. Adding to this the 3 cross polyamide mesh protects against cuts and tears. You’ll have to hit a real big pot hole to get these to give way. With good tread and durability these should last you all winter.

Schwalbe Durano Plus  Review rating 4 out of 5
Weight 305g. Cost-approx £32.99
The heaviest of those reviewed but only the keenest of ‘racing snakes’ will notice this knocking out those winter base miles. A thick rubber compound runs right up to the shoulder and with the Smart Guard protection belt that sits under the tread will stop flints or shards. Again lots of tread and durability will keep you going all winter.

Kenda C2C Review rating 3 ½ out of 5
Weight 204g. Cost-approx £29.99
The lightest tyre of the review. There is a good 10 mm middle band but this drops off on the shoulders. There is a traction weave on the sides for those who want to throw the bike around the corners in the wet and muddy winter conditions.

Bontrager RXL All Weather Plus Review rating 3 1/2 out of 5
Weight 246g. Cost-approx £29.99
A good set of protection is offered by the densely woven sub-thread underneath the central 15mm band. Like the Kenda the protection band doesn’t run up the shoulder. However they offer the same level of protection as the Continentals. A good mix of rubber adds durability and tacky adhesion to the wettest of roads.
